What kind of skills would you most like to cultivate to help your professional – and personal – development in 2020?

As an outdoor adventure hub with a big interest in wellbeing, it’s a question we put regularly to our corporate friends and partners. And there are some common and oft-repeated themes that almost always wing their way back:

  • Better focus
  • Better stress management
  • A better work life balance

We’re willing to bet that our top three resonates with you, too. In this age of constant distraction, the sense of being overstretched, over stressed and overwhelmed is pretty much universal.

Ironically, it is something we probably all claim to be ‘mindful’ of.



For a while now, there has been a growing consensus that meditation and mindfulness is the key to soothing our strung out, stressed out souls.

Forward-thinking global brands like Apple, Google and Nike have invested heavily in mindfulness courses and time out for their employees. Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey are well known advocates of the power of meditation.

You won’t hear anyone at Adventure Parc Snowdonia argue against the power of focusing your thoughts with mindful techniques. The idea that being more present in each moment can have a significant effect on productivity and wellbeing is an obvious no-brainer.

But does mindfulness always have to be done in a quiet, meditative environment? Over here in North Wales, we don’t think so.

We believe it is entirely possible to achieve many of the same great benefits we associate with mindfulness and meditation – like concentration, compassion and self-belief for example – by participating in adventure.


The pay-off to taking part in any activity that pushes your boundaries is the enormous sense of wellbeing that it immediately serves up as your reward.

It’s not just about releasing a rush of endorphins – though that’s a nice side effect – it’s way more profound than that. It’s about the sense of freedom, the self-belief, the intense connection to your immediate environment.

Take surfing, for example.

When you’re out there on your board, your focus and attention is completely taken up with being in the moment.

All of your consciousness and effort is put into managing the best outcome possible: catching this wave, making this pop up, standing on your board and staying upright for more than half a second.

By sticking at it and incrementally taking on bigger challenges – catching more waves, making more pop ups, standing up on your board for longer and longer each time – you gradually expand your sense of what you’re capable of, what you can overcome, what you can achieve if your only put your mind to it. That’s a powerful lesson to apply to everyday life. And to take into the office or boardroom.

If our corporate guests, friends, and colleagues are right, it seems we’re all looking for the gift of better focus, less stress and a better work life balance.

Our new Hilton Garden Inn Hotel is taking shape

It’s set to be one of the largest hotels in North Wales, and it is rapidly taking shape on the edge of our world-first inland surf lagoon in the magnificent Conwy Valley.

The envelope of our flagship 106-bedroom Hilton Garden Inn is now complete, with work starting this week on internal walls, along with the mechanical and electrical fit out.

Single storey steel works will be complete in the coming week, and the first of 250 floor-to-ceiling windows also now being fitted.

Our construction project has been underway since July 2019. To ensure minimal environmental impact throughout construction and operation, we’re building it to BEEAM ‘very good’ standards.

The BREEAM rating measures design impact and carbon emissions, design durability and resilience, adaption to climate change, and ecological value and biodiversity protection.

Key measures being taken to reduce the environmental impact of the Hilton Garden Inn Snowdonia include an innovative waste-water management system, FSC-approved timber and photovoltaic roof panels.

We’re proud to have brought a one-of-a-kind adventure parc to North Wales, and we reckon our Hilton Garden Inn is going to seriously enhance our visitor experience.

Our landmark hotel will have its own adventure concierge service

This is the first time that the Hilton Garden Inn brand – which also operates at a number of the UK’s leading sporting venues including Doncaster Racecourse and the Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground – has been brought to Wales.

It will welcome its first guests in winter 2020 and promises unparalleled views across our world-first inland surf lagoon and the Conwy Valley’s mountains-and-forests landscapes beyond.

The hotel will be complemented by high quality hospitality facilities, including an indoor / outdoor wellbeing spa, corporate conference and meeting facilities for up to 230 delegates, and a destination dining restaurant overlooking the surf lagoon.

The Hilton Garden Inn will also launch with our new Adventure Concierge service, which will help our guests to explore a variety of instructor-led activities in the natural playground of North Wales.

Our concierge service will create bespoke itineraries which showcase the best of the region’s adventures, landscapes, food, heritage and culture.

The Hilton Garden Inn will create more than 90 new full-time hospitality roles, bringing the parc’s peak-season workforce to over 200, and now it’s taking shape, we’re able to see just how impressive the guest experience is going to be.

What schools can teach you about how to grow your business

Is it time to step away from the desk and find out what you could learn from adventure?

Life is not just about what we learn, it’s about how and where we learn. And aren’t we all still learning? The many benefits of getting out of our daily four-wall confines to refresh, invigorate and inspire is something schools have long been onto for a long time. In fact, there is even a government-backed Council for Learning outside the Classroom with its own policies and manifesto. There are a few good reasons for that.

A simple Google search will show you a wealth of resources which clearly demonstrate the benefits of taking students out of their daily grind. Countless academic studies point to evidence that it can fast-track students’ skills, values, personal and social development, as well as their behaviour and motivation to learn. In other words, it’s a great way to nurture young minds, and to help students achieve their full potential.

We reckon the very same benefits could apply to your workplace, too.


What’s really interesting to us, is what the teachers who visit Adventure Parc Snowdonia have to say about the psychological impact of adventure.

Typically, schools come to us to take part in a surf lesson, or to get stuck into team challenges on ninja assault and extreme slides at Adrenaline Indoors (by the way, we have our own brilliant version of the Crystal Maze here – shout if you’re interested in finding out more).

They might equally be booked in for a gorge walking or high ropes session, too.

What they do with us isn’t really the point. What they take home with them is. The feedback we get from our teachers is both heartening and invaluable. Here’s a quick snapshot:

  1. Getting out of the classroom immediately re-sets the usual social dynamics of the student group. As one teacher recently put it: “We get to see a whole other side to the young people we work with. Previously unknown talents, abilities and character traits shine through”.
  2. Students develop valuable social skills by having to share decision making about how to overcome challenges.
  3. Taking part in an adventure encourages a sense of ‘team’. And it’s not always the most obvious person who ends up leading it.
  4. Pushing students out of their natural comfort zone has a noticeable impact on their confidence and determination. This can really help with motivation in the classroom. It has had a tangible impact on behaviour.
  5. Taking part in an adventure helps students to develop the psychological and emotional tools that they need to navigate different personalities, and to deal with their stress. That has a positive impact on their lives both in school and at home.
  6. A positive adventure experience can have such a long-term positive impact. “A year on, our students still talk with such joy about their experience at Adventure Parc Snowdonia”.


By creating a nation-wide policy for its approach to outdoor learning and adventure, the UK’s education sector has stolen a march on the world of business.

Human beings don’t stop learning and growing when they leave school – at least, they shouldn’t. Maybe it’s time for the business world to create its own manifesto too. Maybe your business could lead the way.

We are delighted to report that we have just scooped the One for the Kids (family experience) award at the National Geographic Traveller Reader Awards, in association with Audley Travel.

The awards ceremony, which took place at The Montcalm Hotel in Marble Arch, London on Wednesday night, showcased industry innovation and expertise from attractions and destinations across the planet, from Snowdonia to Antarctica, China to Patagonia.

Regarded as the last word on the best places, experiences, hotels and operators which go ‘above and beyond’ to make travelling meaningful and memorable, the National Geographic Traveller Reader Awards celebrate the best new additions to the world of travel.

Candidates are shortlisted by judges, and then readers of the National Geographic Traveller are asked to vote for their favourites. Adventure Parc Snowdonia beat off competition from The Bear Grylls Adventure in Birmingham and Tiger Lodges Reserve in Kent to win in its category.

It’s such a big honour for us to be recognised by the National Geographic Traveller and its readers in this way, and we’re grateful to everyone who voted for us.

The award is testament to the exceptional work of our dedicated team who are passionate about delivering engaging, family-friendly experiences to encourage and celebrate the instinct for challenge and adventure which is in all of us.

A muddy good congratulations to everyone who took part in our Waves, Mud and Mountains race event last weekend!

As always, it was you – our runners, supporters and spectators – who made the day the huge success it was. You did us all proud by creating such a fun and positive atmosphere on the day – and it was so great to see how many of you came in teams of friends, colleagues and family. Awesome work! We hope you’ve all had a well-deserved rest this week.

We want to give a special congratulations to our fastest runners… and there were some really impressive times over the (just-shy-of-10k) course. Here are those winning names for you:

Adventure Parc Snowdonia have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant

In the week that the nation paused to remember those who have lost their lives in service of their country, we are proud to make a public statement of our support and commitment to the Armed Forces.

Leaders from six businesses across North Wales and Greater Manchester joined us at an official ceremony hosted at our new Adrenaline Indoors facility to sign the Armed Forces Covenant.

The Covenant is a pledge which recognises that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives.

Other businesses pledging their support with us this week included Tree Frog Digital, Flexible Lifestyle Employment, Kick Start 2 Employment, Gatewen Training Services and Anchor Group Services.

Greater Manchester based One Stop Hire, which is led by our board director Steve Hitchen, also signed up to the Covenant.

The ceremony was officiated by Colonel Nick Lock OBE, Deputy Commander, 160th (Welsh) Brigade, and attended by Welsh Assembly Member for North Wales, Mark Isherwood.

Shenkin, the Regimental Goat of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Welsh, was also in attendance with The Goat Major, Sergeant Jackson, alongside military personnel from RAF Valley, Delta Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Welsh. After the formalities were completed, our guests enjoyed lunch and enjoyed trying some of our new Adrenaline Indoors adventures.

Signing up to the Covenant was a no brainer for us: we’ve established strong links with the military since we opened in August 2015, working closely with the Help for Heroes sports recovery team as part of their surf therapy programme.

We also recognise the significant value, experience and expertise that former service men and women and military reserves can add to any organisation, and we wholeheartedly support them. It’s great to be able to make that a public pledge by signing up to the Covenant.

At the same event, we also signed up to Disability Confident, a pledge to support the inclusion of people with health issues or disabilities as part of their workforce.

Armed Forces Family Discount

We are delighted to mark our pledge to the Covenant by launching a new Armed Forces Family Discount, which offers a 30% discount on adventure activities and accommodation to serving members and veterans of the Armed Forces.

Waves Mud and Mountains is a unique fitness challenge with added good vibes and a party in our bar when you finish. Happening right here in the heart of North Wales, in and around our beautiful Conwy Valley adventure parc. There's still time to register. You can do that here.


Apart from a huge amount of fun? There are three main stages to the course which take in the kinds of challenges that the title suggests. Distance-wise you can expect to cover just under 10k.


Yes, it’s a big ‘wave’ off from the start line. Your first challenge will be to power through 300 metres of ‘em in our world-first inland surf lagoon. That’s 6 million gallons of watery opposition. You can freestyle this bit – run through the shallows, power through waist-high, or just swim your way to the other side. Up to you.

Once you’ve made it across our lagoon it’s a quick run through our woodland and along our old railway track to our chunky muddy battlefield.


This is where things get a little messy. You’ll be taking on a whole lot of mud and a series of interesting obstacles including log runs, combat nets, water jumps and tyre pits.


Brace yourself. This is where you’re going to need a bit of grit to get you over the finish line. Your mountain stage is an infamous killer pipeline of pain – the notoriously steep Dolgarrog Water Pipe incline. How many steps is it? We’re not telling. Just don’t. look. up.

By the time you’re at the top, you might want to pause to take in the view before your cross-country descent down to the finish line.


Your finish line is back at Adventure Parc Snowdonia. Once you’re there, it’s time to enjoy the celebrations with your supporters and give yourself some post-race R&R! There will be a free beer or soft drink for every competitor, with post-race celebrations in our bar & kitchen.

This is a free-to-watch event. Entry and parking to our adventure parc is always free. Our deli will be open all day, serving hot drinks, light meals and snacks.

“Registration and start time”

Registration is from 9am and the first race group will start the race at 11am. Each competitor will be assigned a start wave time, look out for your email from us with your specific instructions.

”How old do I have to be to take part?”

This year’s race is for over-16s only.

“Can I enter a group?”

Yes, but to register as a group you must all book together on one booking so we can ensure you’re all put together on the same wave. If you hit any snags just email us on or call 01492 353 123.

“Do I need to be able to swim?”

Yes, you should be able to swim confidently for at least 25 metres. All water elements of the course will be well lifeguarded.

“What if I can’t complete one of the stages?”

This is about having fun and enjoying the challenge! You can miss out any part of the course you don’t feel confident with.

“What should I wear?”

Trail running shoes (no metal spikes). The water and mud will be cold, we suggest base layers for top and bottom and gloves are recommended. Bring a smile and some grit.

"Where should I change?"

Probably easiest to store your kit in your car, but you will have access to our showers and changing rooms after the event! Don't forget your towel.
